Pua Tiare

The tiare flower, scientifically known as Gardenia taitensis, is a white, fragrant flower native to Tahiti and widely recognized across Polynesia. It holds deep cultural meaning, especially in Tahitian traditions, where it is commonly worn behind the ear—on the left if a person is taken, and on the right if they are single.

Historically, the tiare has been used in perfumes, ceremonial adornments, and traditional medicine. It is also the national flower of French Polynesia and symbolizes purity, beauty, and love. The flower is closely associated with Polynesian identity and is often used in leis, oils (such as monoi oil), and cultural celebrations.

While not native to Hawaiʻi, the tiare has become appreciated in broader Pacific Island culture and is sometimes incorporated into Hawaiian-inspired art and design due to shared Polynesian heritage.

Hawaiian Quilt

Hawaiian quilting, known as kapa kuiki, is a traditional textile art that developed in Hawaiʻi during the 19th century after the arrival of Western missionaries. Unlike patchwork quilts, Hawaiian quilts are typically made from a single folded piece of fabric that is cut into a symmetrical design—much like paper snowflakes—then appliquéd onto a contrasting background.

The designs are deeply symbolic and often inspired by nature, such as breadfruit (ʻulu), taro (kalo), or native flowers and leaves. Quilting was introduced as part of missionary teaching, but Native Hawaiian women transformed it into a unique cultural expression. Over time, these quilts became important heirlooms, telling stories of family, place, and identity.
