'One 'Ele'ele"Black Sand"The glottal stop in the Hawaiian language is called the 'okina. The 'okina is more a part of the contemporary written version of Hawaiian language. Much of the old way of speaking has less to do with the 'okina. It wasn't until the missionaries worked on a written version of the language that they developed this consonant to distinguish words. The 'okina acts as a phonemic stop to separate some vowels, especially repeating ones (i.e. a'a and O'ahu). The 'okina can always be seen as a backwards apostrophe.
